This month’s success story features Tanya, who receives care through AWARE’s Therapeutic Recreation service line. Tanya has been a client with AWARE since early 2023 and is a true inspiration. She is a model of the amazing things that life can bring when you stay true to yourself.
Tanya was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in 2021 and underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy. After finding herself unhappy with her quality of life, she bravely advocated for herself and opted out of treatment. Since then, she has chosen her own destiny and to live life to the fullest, exercising and using art as an impressive creative outlet. Tanya has been symptom free for 9 months.
A jack of many trades – Tanya shared her various ambitions and experiences. From California, Oregon, and beyond being a truck driver – loading her own freight, to the restaurant industry – in positions from busser to management, and now to the wonderful, friendly state of Montana where she calls home.
Pursuing her passions - Tanya shares her artwork with local galleries in Missoula. Her pieces are currently at the Horse Teeth Gallery above the Import Market and are available for purchase. Here are a few of her creations.

Being the courageous, brave woman she is, Tanya was determined to ride a horse once again as she did in her youth in California. And that she did. With the help of the Therapeutic Recreation team, and Best Day Ever Funds, Tanya had the opportunity to ride a horse at Trotting Horse Therapeutic Riding. On a beautiful, sunny day in October, Tanya was able to enjoy the freedom and peace that horseback riding brings. Her favorite memories of the day are building a connection to her horse, Piglet. They rode down a beautiful trail to the river and cherished the day together. Here are some pictures from Tanya’s Best Day Ever.
Tanya shared her time with AWARE as being a positive, successful experience. She contributes this to the kindness of her team who have supported both her physical and mental health. They have been advocates of her creative expression and physical exercise through bike rides and more, including getting out and socializing with the community. Therapeutic Recreation has given her goals to work towards, and she is crushing them!
A mother, grandmother, sister, artist, horseback rider, and more – we are so proud of you Tanya and your bravery that has created so many beautiful opportunities.
Memories and Best Day Ever experiences like these only happen with your generous support. Thank you to all who made this possible. Consider making more memories like this a reality and donate today.
